Fire Hazards Prompt Genie Garage Door Opener Recall

The product liability lawyers at SHOOP | A PROFESSIONAL LAW CORPORATION again remind consumers that on February 25, 2014 the Genie Company, in conjunction and cooperation with the United States Consumer Products Safety Association ("CPSC") has instituted a voluntary product recall of its Genie Pro TriloG 1200 garage door opener.

The product defect associated with these various garage door openers involves the various, units' control boards, which can overheat, melt and thereby pose a substantial fire hazard and risk of burn injury. There are about 10,000 such garage door opener units currently in distribution within the United States and another 8,000 such units in Canada.

For product identification purposes, this product recall involves the following Genie garage door opener models:

PowerMax 1200;
PowerMax 1500;
TriloG 1200; and
TriloG 1500.

These garage door openers come in the color gray and have associated ratings of ¾ HPc for the 1200 models and 1 HPc for the 1500 models. The company name, "Genie" and the respective name of the model can be found on both sides of the garage door openers. The various identifying, serial numbers can be found on labeling located upon the side of the opener opposite to the unit's lighting.

Genie is already in receipt of four (4) reports from the field with regard to the unit's control board overheating. Consumers are urged by CPSC to cease using immediately these various, recalled products and unplug them.

These products were sold at retail at various locations, notably Lowes, Home Depot, and other such retailers, distributors and hardware stores nationwide. They were additionally sold online at These units were on the market from from approximately August of 2011 to October of 2012 and retailed for approximately $250. They were manufactured by GMI Holdings, Inc., dba The Genie Company, of Mt. Hope, Ohio. Note that federal law prohibits any person from selling or otherwise distributing recalled, consumer products.
