At this time of year, certain types of fires and injuries involving holiday lighting and decor are, unfortunately, all too common. Statistically in the United States, fires involving Christmas trees from the time period 2007 through 2011, necessitated involvement from fire departments which responded to a staggering, average (annual) of 230 residential structure fires whose origin was traced to Christmas trees. During this time period, residential Christmas tree ignition was responsible for an average of six (6) deaths, another twenty-two (22) catastrophic burn injuries, and roughly $18 million in annual damage to property on a yearly basis.

Electrical malfunctions and/or electrical failures were responsible for approximately one-third (32%) of residential, Christmas tree structural ignitions - and roughly seventeen (17%) of which ignited due to some typicality of heat source which was in too close proximity to the Christmas tree. Moreover, festive Holiday lighting on line voltage were implicated in roughly twelve (12) percent of these fire incidents. Yet another seven (7) percent of residential Christmas tree ignitions were started by festive candles.

Twenty percent of home Christmas tree structure fires were intentionally set. Half of the intentional Christmas tree fires occurred in the 20 days after Christmas. The risk of fire is higher with natural trees than artificial ones. Researchers found that dry natural trees burned easily but trees that had been kept moist are unlikely to catch fire unintentionally.

The holidays should be a time for celebrating with family and loved ones - but care should be taken to ensure that your Christmas tree, candles and festive lights do not ruin your Holiday season and do not cause serious burn injuries.
