Recall issued for popular baby rattle

Recently, nearly 700,000 baby rattles were recalled due to possible choking hazards. Specifically, the popular "Oball" rattle was recalled because the clear plastic disc on the outside of the ball can break, thereby releasing small beads, which children may put in their mouths and choke on.

Thus far, there have been 42 reported cases of the plastic disc breaking, including three reports of gagging and two more in which beads were found in children's mouths.

How do I know if I have this rattle?

This particular recall involves Oball rattles in blue, green, pink and orange, and they have the model number of 81031 printed on the packaging and on the inner surface of one of the plastic discs. In addition, the rattles are four inches in diameter and have 28 finger holes. Within the rattles are a clear plastic disc with orange beads and two clear plastic discs with beads of several colors.

However, only rattles with following date codes are subject to this recall: T0486, T1456, T2316, T2856 and T3065. These date codes can be located on a small triangle on the inner surface of the rattles in question. If you think you may have one of these rattles, you should immediately take it away from your child and contact the company for a full refund.

Unfortunately, the sad reality is that this rattle recall is just the most recent example of dangerous products that children are unknowingly exposed to every day. It is important to remember, however, that companies are legally responsible when they manufacturer defective products and children are injured as a result.
