Fire alarm wireless gateway recalled — is your building safe?

We expect fire alarm systems to do one very important thing: warn us when a building might be on fire. Unfortunately, however, as alarm systems get more complex and reliant on new technology, additional opportunities for errors arise — leading to some systems not being able to perform this one and only function.

In fact, just last Friday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of Honeywell’s SWIFT wireless gateway, which was sold with fire alarm systems and installed primarily in apartment buildings, hotels, office buildings, industrial facilities and other commercial properties.

What exactly is a wireless gateway for fire alarms?

Essentially, the SWIFT wireless gateway is a bridge between the fire alarm control panel and the smoke detectors. According to the CPSC recall notice, the smoke detectors connected to a SWIFT wireless gateway can fail to activate when “significant environmental contaminants” are present, meaning there is a risk that people will not be alerted to a fire.

Fortunately, no injuries have been linked to this recalled product thus far. But, as you can imagine, the risk of severe burn injury increases dramatically during a building fire if people do not receive a prompt warning. Quite simply, there is no room for error when people’s lives are at risk.

These potentially defective wireless gateways were sold at Honeywell distributors nationwide between October 2014 and December 2016, and are white, round and are roughly eight inches in diameter. If you would like to learn more about indentifying this product, you should read the recent CPSC recall notice.
