Recall for HP batteries due to fire hazard

Most everyone has a laptop, but if you own an HP notebook computer, then you need to see if your laptop is at risk of combustion. On Jan. 4, 2018, Hewlett-Packard issued a recall notice for specific types of HP computers and mobile workstations that have faulty batteries.

The batteries have the potential to overheat, increasing the likelihood of burns and fires. As of this writing, eight battery packs have already overheated, resulting in melted and damaged computer units. One person has already sustained an injury: a first-degree burn to the hand. If you own an HP laptop, then you need to follow certain actions to avoid injury.

Process to remedy the situation

Estimates suggest there are around 50,000 units with these faulty units in the United States and Canada. The recall impacts specific laptops, including:

  • HP ZBook 17 G3 Mobile Workstation
  • HP ZBook 17 G4 Mobile Workstation
  • HP ZBook Studio G3 Mobile Workstation
  • HP 11
  • HP Pavilion x360
  • HP Envy m6
  • HPx360 310 G2
  • HP ProBook 64x G2 series
  • HP ProBook 64x G3 series
  • HP ProBook 65x G2 series
  • HP ProBook 65x G3 series

To be certain whether your computer falls within the recall's guidelines, you can visit HP's website. It is vital for consumers to be aware that they cannot replace the batteries by hand. This task requires a professional technician's assistance, and HP will replace the batteries free of charge when you take your computer to an authorized service.

Using battery safety mode

HP released a BIOS update that places a computer's battery in "battery safety mode." This makes it so that users can still safely use their laptop by plugging it in with an HP power adaptor. This means the computer will not be reliant on the battery, eliminating the threat of overheating. However, consumers should only use this as a temporary fix until they can take their devices to an authorized retailer.
